By Financial Secretary Lois Rizzi
November 14, 2024

On Saturday, November 9th at 3:45AM the Putnam Valley Volunteer Fire Department was dispatched to a large area brush fire in the wooded area located between Chapman and Camp Collins Roads. Due to the dry and windy weather conditions and the steep, rocky terrain, dry fallen leaves and brush and the large acreage, the situation created a hazardous and a difficult environment.

Our Members along with our mutual aid volunteer fire departments, worked continually until dusk bringing the fire under control.

Putnam Valley members were back on the scene Sunday morning at 8am to survey the area. Once again dealing with dry and windy weather conditions, our crews had to resume work establishing fire lines and drenching smoldering hot spots in order to prevent the fire from once again spreading. We worked the entire day using several hose lines until all hotspots were extinguished. The day did not end until 7pm that night, as the equipment and trucks needed to be cleaned and put back in service.

It was a great job by our Department Members as well as the Members of the neighboring Departments. All worked long hours with tireless dedication until the area was made safe.

We would like to express our sincere gratitude and appreciation to the members of the following Departments for the support:

Kent Volunteer Fire Department
Cold Spring Fire Company
Montrose Fire Department
Buchanan Fire Department
Verplanck Fire District
Mahopac Falls Fire Department
Continental Village Fire Department
Garrison Volunteer Fire Company
North Highland Fire Department
Putnam County Bureau Emergency Services
