A Community Message from the Putnam Valley Volunteer Fire Department

By Financial Secretary Lois Rizzi
May 16, 2025

The Board of Directors of the Putnam Valley Volunteer Fire Department has historically chosen not to engage in online debates or social media commentary. We believe that back-and-forth arguments on these platforms are rarely productive. However, recent misinformation—particularly on one platform—has prompted us to respond with facts and clarity.

Our Members and Mission
Since 1946, the Putnam Valley Volunteer Fire Department has proudly served our community as a fully volunteer organization. Our 65 active members dedicate countless hours each week to training, emergency response, equipment/apparatus maintenance, and managing our nonprofit operations. We respond to all types of emergencies—fire, rescue, and support—and have never missed a call for assistance in nearly 80 years. That’s a record of service and reliability we are deeply proud of.

Unlike some neighboring departments that have struggled with personnel issues and needed assistance to cover calls, we remain well-staffed, active, and committed. We are puzzled by recent claims that a paid or partially paid department is imminent for Putnam Valley. Such a statement is purely speculative and unfounded.

We Need You
We are always looking for new members. If you’ve ever considered volunteering, now is the time. You don’t need to be a firefighter to make a difference—our volunteers include doctors, teachers, lawyers, tradespeople, business owners, and retirees. Our current treasurer is a retired CPA/banker. Whether your strength is firefighting, administration, logistics, or simply lending a hand, there’s a role for you.

Come see what we’re all about—visit us at Headquarters (next to Town Hall) any Tuesday evening or Sunday morning. We’d love to meet you and share more about how you can be involved.

Regarding the Firehouse Construction
Our current headquarters sits on land leased from the Town of Putnam Valley under a 99-year lease. When the fire department vacates the property, ownership of the land and any buildings reverts to the Town.

Construction of our new building began in July, 2021. Unfortunately, we encountered delays, including bedrock issues, the death of the general contractor’s principal owner, and subsequent changes under new management. Further delays caused by the contractor continue to frustrate us, and penalties are being accrued. Rest assured, we are doing everything within our power to complete this project as quickly and efficiently as possible.

Let’s Talk—In Real Life
We hope this message helps correct some of the inaccuracies being circulated online. We invite anyone with questions to come speak with us in person—any Tuesday evening or Sunday morning at our station. We have nothing to hide and are always open to constructive conversation.

Thank you for your continued support and for allowing us the privilege of serving our community.

JD Apostolico, President
Vito Rizzi, Chief of Department
Bruce Johnson, Board Chairman
